Diseases We Analyze & Treat
Dr. Jones provides expert diagnosis and management of a wide range of eye conditions using advanced diagnostic technology and in-office treatments.
Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD)
ARMD is the leading cause of vision loss in patients older than 50. It causes damage to the area of the retina dedicated to central vision, or your fine detailed vision. It directly impacts a patient's ability to read, drive, write, or perform activities that require precision vision.
Glaucoma
Glaucoma can be caused by multiple processes but all cause direct damage to the optic nerve, which sends the picture the eye sees to the brain. Vision loss related to glaucoma directly impacts the peripheral vision, which is very subtle and unnoticeable until severe damage causes symptoms.
Diabetic Complications
Ocular complications from diabetes, either type 1 or type 2, are called diabetic retinopathy. Retinopathy usually begins with damage to the small blood vessels in the retina (the tissue that receives the image). Types of damage include small to large bleeds, swelling, deposits, and late-stage complications such as new blood vessel growth and potential retinal detachment.
Eyelid Lesions (Lumps, Bumps, Skin Tags)
Lesions on the eyelid can range from painful infections called styes to small benign growths often referred to as skin tags. Lid infections can become serious if not managed appropriately. Most are managed very well with antibiotics taken by mouth and not drops. Often the benign lid lesions are able to be removed chemically without needles, stitches, or blades.
Keratoconus (Irregular Corneas)
Keratoconus is when the front part of the eye (cornea) bulges and causes an irregular shape. Often misdiagnosed as irregular astigmatism, treatment attempts are usually high prescription glasses and/or contacts. Appropriate treatment is using a minor surgical procedure called Corneal Crosslinking in combination with specialty contact lenses called scleral lenses.
Dry Eye
Dry eye is a condition where the tear film on the front surface of the eye is deficient in one of the three layers. The most common form of tear deficiency is a loss of quality in the oily layer of the tear film. This layer is responsible for keeping the watery layer from evaporating. Once deficient, this causes an overproduction of the watery layer which then causes more loss of the oil layer, resulting in excessive tearing and burning. Appropriate analysis of the tear film is paramount to relieving symptoms and delivering the correct therapy.
Therapeutic Contact Lenses
Therapeutic contact lenses involve multiple contact lens designs and management of conditions requiring them. Scleral lenses are designed to cover the entire cornea without touching the surface. They are fitted on the white part of the eye to provide an optimum optical surface. They can neutralize the irregularities caused by keratoconus and corneal scarring.
Laser Treatments (Glaucoma & After Cataract Surgery)
The SLT and YAG lasers are two different lasers, now within a single instrument, that can treat some vision-threatening conditions. The SLT laser is used to treat glaucoma by decreasing the pressure inside the eye. This can be done to either prevent the need for drops to treat glaucoma or add to the drop therapy when additional treatment is required. The YAG laser is used for patients who have developed a haze behind their lens after cataract surgery. Both lasers are extremely patient-friendly, take minutes to perform, and are conducted in the office.
